Every show’s got them. And some of these Bay City Bloopers have no real excuse.

But, at the same time, the folks in charge of the physical set of a show filmed in the 70s weren’t even thinking of the idea of fast-forward, magnify, and slo-mo, much less the ability to view episodes on-demand in a private home.

There is a fine line between some Continuity Errors and some Notes and Mysteries, and as Bobby (Survival) says, “and vise versa.”

Continuity Errors A

“She only said that maybe once she made a mistake.”

Starsky’s sweater is on, then off, and then on in the pool scene. (Pilot)
Starsky says, “Look at those legs” to Hutch, referring to a woman that has a full-length nightgown on. And it couldn’t have been the dog as it has a raincoat on. (Pilot)
“Joanne Mello” mentions being frightened about “what happened this morning,” but the shooting was the day before. (Death Ride)
Hutch’s arm with tracks in the close up is inaccurate. The camera shot angle is wrong and the shirt is too clean. It is an infill shot. (The Fix)
The fake Torino has the same license plate as the real one. And Tony’s car has the same one four years later. (Starsky and Hutch Are Guilty, Discomania)
When Starsky is holding Prudholm by the throat, sometimes he has two hands on him, sometimes one hand and the gun. (Starsky’s Lady)
Ward Billings, on a gurney and wheeled to ambulance, is dead. His face, however, is uncovered and his eyes are open. (The Committee)
Zane and Canelli blast two huge holes in hotel door. In the next scene the holes are gone. And the next scene, they are there again. (Pilot)
Starsky’s beer levels in glass change. (The Committee)

The daylight level changes from dark to lighter on the drive Starsky and Hutch make to the massage parlor. It should either stay the same or get darker. (Captain Dobey, You’re Dead)
When Hutch “shoots” Starsky, a spot appears on his shirt. Later, the shirt is unmarked. (Ninety Pounds of Trouble)
The negative has been flipped in one scene showing Starsky driving the Torino. It shows Starsky driving from the right side of the car, Brit style. (Captain Dobey, You’re Dead)
Hutch’s jeans change color often. (The Crying Child)

Artie Solkin’s mug shot is the same photo frame as his line-up with the other perps. The angle of the camera also makes him look like he is 6’6.” (Vendetta)
Starsky is wearing the same brown and white shirt in his FBI kickback report that he is wearing in the show. The photo looks like it was taken on the same day. (The Specialist)
When the Torino stalls, there are no cars behind it. When Starsky and Hutch get out, there is a jam behind them. (Death in a Different Place)
Billy gets the time of his and Nancy’s wedding wrong. It is either a script error or his error. (Terror on the Docks)
Hutch tosses clothes on the bed in a pile. When Starsky comes to the house, the clothes are all neat and tidy. (The Fix)
Hutch’s shirt is buttoned up right, then wrong, then right again while he lets Starsky in the door to the hotel. (A Body Worth Guarding)
Starsky points out Gil’s car to hose guy, and the shot is of an open street. When Hutch messes with the tire, the car is next to a white brick wall. It is a different infill shot. (Losing Streak)
Hutch shows Starsky Jack’s desk calendar while Starsky sits in the car. The date is the 3rd in first two shots and the 4th on the last one. (Class in Crime)

The Mercedes turns into a Mustang when it explodes. (Cover Girl)
The Torino’s window is shot out in the alley, but repaired when Starsky and Hutch go to collar Forest. (The Fix)
Hutch says Patricia Talbert took a class from Henderson twice a week, but her class schedule shows it everyday but Tuesday. (Pilot)
Hutch’s hand is slashed in the underground parking lot. A few days later, there is no sign of the injury. In fact, he smashes a fist into the palm of his hand as he and Huggy leave law office. (Sweet Revenge)
Hutch tells Lou Scobie he will meet him at Barnaby’s in twenty minutes, yet he sets his oven timer for thirty-five minutes. Hutch must figure Lou will talk really fast, and that whatever Hutch is cooking could stand a little extra time in the oven. (Survival)
Starsky pushes Jojo into the car through the front door, yet Jojo is in the backseat in the next shot. (Jojo)
Hutch puts the mars light on the Torino on the way to the robbery, but it is off when they arrive. Not knowing how far sound travels makes it unlikely he takes if off before they get there to be crafty, so looks like a production error. (Tap Dancing Her Way Right Back Into Your Heart)
Steve says Starsky doesn’t look enough like him to “fool a blind man,” yet in a previous scene Starsky plays his stunt double. (Murder on Stage 17)
Hutch refers to the Green Parrot as the Parrot Club when talking to Huggy. (Death in a Different Place)
Starsky and Hutch bet $5 over Chris Phelps. That bet turns into $10 without explanation, before the guys up the bet to $20. (The Heroes)
Joey Carston flings her jacket over her shoulders. In the first scene, it is all the way over her shoulder. As she walks to her bedroom, the sleeve is stuck on her head. (The Trap)
Starsky has frying pan in one hand, tries to put the red zippered sweatshirt on with the other as he and Hutch hurry out the door. Seconds later, Starsky’s sweatshirt is zipped all the way up, pan in hand. (Satan’s Witches)
Starsky’s hat, which falls off his head as he falls out of the cab, isn’t next to the car when Hutch and K.C. show up. (Quadromania)
Starsky and Hutch tell Toni that they will be up later to tuck her in. The McDermott’s live in an apartment. (The Action)
Starsky takes Julie out “to the porch,” but the McDermotts live in an apartment. (The Action)
The Anderson family goes into the Federal Witness Protection Program in 1958, but the Program didn’t start until the late ‘60s. (Targets Without a Badge: Part 2, Targets Without a Badge: Part 3)
Hutch asks Starsky what they know after “two days of research.” Then they head to the county sheriff and ask for the logbook for “last week on Tuesday.” One of those times is wrong, or they spent about four days or so just hanging around doing nothing. (Targets Without a Badge: Part 3)
When Corman, Burke, and Kalowitz force the LTD over, the cars are right next to each other. When they get out, there is six feet between them. (Snowstorm)

Continuity Errors B

Both Manny Birnbaum and Francine say they recognize Anton in the picture, from the alley, but neither of them actually saw him then. (Death Notice)
The time on wall clock when Hutch sneaks into Starsky’s room is 8:45, yet Dobey complains how hard it was to get an antipasto platter at 2:00 in the morning. (Sweet Revenge)
Starsky and Hutch originally say Dewey Hughes got $100,000 from the candy store, but this amount turns into $50,000 with no explanation. (Kill Huggy Bear)
In close-ups with the runaway Torino, the mars light is missing, but you can hear the siren. (Kill Huggy Bear)
Madame Marlene Bouvet tells Hutch and Dobey her dancer, Susan, is “dumb.” So Susan’s math is either an example of this, or a continuity error. Susan tells Starsky “half the men in the joint are strange” and three quarters of them are “really strange.” (Starsky vs. Hutch)
Hutch one-handedly pulls the tablecloth off table. The scene before it shows the table with stuff on it. This stuff would have hit the floor. (Shootout)
Starsky and Hutch know Harry’s last name is Johnson, but Amy didn’t mention this fact. (The Hostages)
Starsky calls for a black and white back-up, but Starsky and Hutch leave Belinda’s with Lemke laying out in the hall with no further communication. (Losing Streak)
Starsky is wearing the same blue windbreaker Hutch cut up in the previous episode. (The Hostages)
Starsky and Hutch crawl through little door to get inside Mardi Gras. White and Evelyn walk in thru unlocked front door. Most likely because no one wanted to make Evelyn get down and crawl too. This is obviously not the back either, as marquee is in front, and White makes a point of having Foote go around to the back. Monty’s desk is covered with peanuts when he is alive, the desk is cleared of peanuts at his death, but Starsky walks to car eating a peanut. (The Bounty Hunter)
The long shot placement of Nick’s body and trashcans in the ally is very different from the close up shot. It is a different infill shot. (Little Girl Lost)
Vicky says the party is across the hall, but across the hall from Vicky’s apartment is a railing and balcony. (The Las Vegas Strangler)
Nancy, Clayburn’s secretary, appears to know Dobey’s phone number from memory. (Targets Without a Badge: Part 3)
Despite Starsky’s wounds and thirty-plus minutes of bleeding, the couch is spotless. (Shootout)
The storeowner says guys didn’t care about the money, only about shooting Terry. So why is Prudholm’s thumbprint on the register? (Starsky’s Lady)
Dobey says only three people that know Starsky is undercover, but that doesn’t include the poor uniform staked out in Starsky’s bedroom. (The Committee)

The diploma in Dobey’s office read, “Harold R. Dobey (I Love You, Rosey Malone, Pilot). Dobey’s diploma says, “Harold P. Dobey,” (Death Ride, The Groupie, I Love You, Rosey Malone). “Harold C. Dobey,” (Pariah). The correct initial is “C,” however, as that is what Dobey tells Sue Ann to put on her autographed photo. (Long Walk Down a Short Dirt Road)
The visible text of the two newspaper articles about Charlie Deek’s murder rampage, Starsky and Hutch’s “daring arrest” of Deek, the article about Matwick’s indictment, and the second part of the article about Lionel’s accident are four identical blurbs of nothingness and are precisely the same words in the article about the “stolen” stamp. The text reads: “The facts regarding the situation remain the same, state the authorities. Details concerning the action have been given a preliminary investigation but it is felt that only by a more detailed study will the facts become known. An immediate investigation is assumed and indications are that some new light will be shed on the situation in the near future. Available facts seem vague, but authorities feel that time will disclose some means of arriving at a solution. Future plans, of necessity, have great bearing on the situation as it now stands. The score number Huggy’s pinball game changes from 14 to 15 with no motion on his part. (Kill Huggy Bear)

Why does the morgue call Sarah to identify Dewey Hughes’s body before it is even moved to the ambulance? (Kill Huggy Bear)
Major Timing Issue: Starsky and Hutch are seen calling in a meal break and eating in Torino, Vic plays piano with Toby, Vic has a run-in with Foote, Vic goes back and steals money, Starsky and Hutch are still eating when they get the report of people beating up Evelyn Rankin. It all happens too fast, or Starsky and Hutch are taking way too long to eat. (Losing Streak)
Starsky and Hutch meet with Huggy, go to the Mardi Gras the first time and discover Vic, call an ambulance and get Vic to hospital and then Vic gets well enough to leave. This all happens after Evelyn was taken by Gil and Foote, which Hutch tells Vic happened “about an hour ago.” The timing is far too condensed. (Losing Streak)
The toy plane the angel crashes shown after the crash is arranged differently than the one in the next shot. It is a different infill shot. (Cover Girl)
In the opening scene, it is two days before Christmas. Hutch says this to Perkowitz about Juvie, Starsky says to Hutch in car. Molly / Pete stays with Hutch one night and with the Williams one night. After Molly is kidnapped the first time, Starsky comments “tomorrow is Christmas Eve,” making it appear no time has passed at all. (Little Girl Lost)

There is a group of people in the hallway when Hutch sees a man sneaking into Starsky’s room; they mysteriously disappear when he runs after the man in next scene. (Sweet Revenge)
Carlyle’s hospital room is #614, but asks for Officer Kromack at “5th West” hospital wing. (Ninety Pounds of Trouble)
It is clearly Starsky’s stunt double driving the blue car that almost hits Joey’s yellow Mercedes. It appears to be him in jail along with Lenny Biggs. It is possible the man Hutch runs into while escaping Monk is the stunt double as well. (Ninety Pounds of Trouble, Strange Justice, The Fix)
How does Carlyle get a beautifully fitted, three piece suit on his hurried dash from hospital to Schiller? (Ninety Pounds of Trouble)

Sharon reminds Emily of their 5:00 meeting at the park bench. The time on Starsky’s watch appears to be 6:20 when he grabs camera off rack in his apartment. If the time is 6:20 pm, then he has missed Emily by 80 minutes. If he has been taking photos at the park since 6:20 am, he is certainly an early riser, as well as a persistent photographer. Continuity Errors C

The girls settle Night and Day into what the camera suggests is the sixth floor. The next scene shows their place as the ground floor. (Starsky and Hutch on Voodoo Island)
Easy tells Night and Day to “keep off the grass,” but people are all over the grass in the next shot and beyond. (Starsky and Hutch on Voodoo Island)
Despite five stitches in his hand less than two days ago, Hutch gets his bare hand wet, no stitches are seen, he pours shampoo into that hand and washes his hair vigorously with no apparent pain. (Fatal Charm)
Hutch clutches his half-eaten apple. It disappears out of his hand when he opens his locker to see the newspaper article. No, it isn’t on the floor. And no, it isn’t that second half-eaten apple on top shelf of his locker. (Murder Ward)
The outside entrance to the Galleria, as viewed from the street, is very different from the one shown as people come into the door. (I Love You, Rosey Malone)
Merle calls Sulko’s car chartreuse when it is actually red. (Jojo)
Hutch says he “doesn’t feel too funny this morning,” to Janos. It is actually about 4:00 in the afternoon. (A Coffin for Starsky)
Starsky tells Hutch and Cheryl, “This arm’s been really getting it,” referring to injections. Actually, Bellamy’s hypo was in the other arm. (A Coffin for Starsky)
Earl’s gun makes no bullet marks in Packrat’s door when he fires on Starsky. (Running)
There are three phone numbers for Fair Bail Bonds. The one on the side inside, 555.1701, is the mistake. The two others, 454.1701 and HO4 1701, are variations on the same number, despite the immediate differences. (The Bounty Hunter)
Orrin Lawson is killed with a vicious stab would to the stomach / abdomen, yet his corpse appears to be clean and untouched. (Death in a Different Place)
Dr. Kaufman’s flight leaves from Gate Five, yet she heads off down the concourse to Gates Thirty to Thirty-Five R. (The Plague)
The address of the Lone Star Bar and Grill may be 440, but it isn’t 440 Wilmington as referenced; it is 440 S. Los Angeles, determined from the sign in the alley Hutch runs through as he runs into thugs who want his bag. (The Psychic)
The note Matt Coyle writes out for Starsky and Hutch to bring in Longman is completely different than the one Hutch shows Johnny at the bar. The first note has four lines, large writing and a very distinct left-handed script. The second note has five lines, smaller print, different font, and the words “Johnny Longman,” which the first note did not have. (Iron Mike)
The apartment house on Garvey has seven names on the main mailbox where Hutch knocks. Yet Hutch doesn’t go in the outer door to knock on the specific apartment door. Then, when he opens the door, the view is directly into the perp’s living room. (Iron Mike)
Starsky has to re-introduce himself to Merle the Earl when he and Hutch go to ask about Sulko’s car; Merle sort of remembers Starsky through Starsky’s Uncle Al. Yet a year later, Starsky tells Hutch Merle has been “doing my work for years.” (Jojo, Bloodbath)
The bus Lisa Graham is raped in has two different numbers. The exterior number is 1011. The interior number is 5477. (Nightmare)
Molly comes into the squad room and Starsky is sitting on one side of the desk. She sits down to talk and he is on the other side, having had no time to move. (The Collector)
Starsky’s watch says 6:40, but the clock in the hospital hall says 10:50 at the time Jackson comes out of surgery. (Manchild on the Streets)

The angle in the photograph Hutch takes of Ginger in the Torino is all wrong from his view out of Starsky’s apartment. He would need another forty-five degrees. (The Committee)
Starsky’s forehead band-aid changes sides while he waits for Hutch to be brought to the room by the nurse. (Partners)
Starsky, Hutch, Dobey, Mello, and Williams walk through the same hallway and past the same door three times. (Death Ride)
The sound of the horn goes off a split-second before Victor O’Connor’s head hits it. (Quadromania)
Hutch says 1427 Lennox is “near where we found that medallion.” Starsky and Hutch didn’t find the medallion, it came off of Danny Daveen, the drug dealer, in Starsky’s cab. And to be more precise, a cut scene shows Danny finding it in the trash. (Quadromania)
Lionel chooses his victims from the cabstand on 3rd and Main. His accident, which he is avenging with the time and place, occurs at 4th and Main (according to the newspaper article). This is either a continuity error, or the accident occurred a block from the cabstand. (Quadromania)
Starsky drives an old checker cab, but the long shot of him driving with Danny Daveen shows a modern sedan. (Quadromania)
Harry sends Laura out to the market at 4:45 pm. At some point before this time, Starsky and Hutch hope to “get lucky” and catch Harry, as Hutch mentions the sunset happens in two hours. A short time later, Starsky and Hutch argue about Hutch going in undercover. Starsky says it gets dark in an hour. The clock reads 6:10 after Laura hits Harry with the vase, yet it is still very, very bright outside. Even here in Minnesota, in the dead of winter, the sun stays up until 4:00 or 4:30. Just what time does the sun go down in Bay City? (Deckwatch)

Lizzie Thorpe tells Hutch it is her first night at Fever. Tony Mariposa seems to be seeing Lizzie there for the first time as well. Yet Tony tells Lizzie, “I was watching you out on the dance floor the other day.” (Discomania)
Lizzie Thorpe tells her husband she will be home by midnight. It appears it is 12:30, a half an hour past this time when Starsky and Hutch realize Marty Decker isn’t their suspect, get the word about her car being located, and then rushing off. It is very dark outside. It is very light outside, with the time appearing to be just before 5:00 am when Starsky and Hutch finally make it to Fever’s garage to see her car. Just what have they been doing for the last four and a half hours? (Discomania)
Hutch tells Rudy they have to confiscate the moonshine as it is bootleg, but they end up leaving it. Rudy puts it back under the bar. (Moonshine)
Starsky tells Hutch his dance contest with Roxy is “tonight,” when they pull up to the Smokey Mountain Inn. Dobey tells Hutch, after Kendall is found, his and Starsky’s cover better be better than the agents “tonight,” which would be Amateur Night at the Backwoods Inn. It is certainly at least one day later, perhaps more, when Starsky and Hutch wrap up the case with the dance contest still coming up that night. (Moonshine)
Hutch wakes up at Marianne’s place. She tells him it is 7:00 in the morning. Hutch appears at his own place, rushes out to save Marianne, he and Starsky get to her place, rush up the stairs after the altercation in Marianne’s place and Harry is shot. Perhaps Reuben provides a valet service? There are no cars parked in front of Reuben’s building when we first see Reuben, Lucas, and Huntley there. When Huntley leaves, his car is in front, and Jimmy Lucas’ car is parked right behind it. (Birds of a Feather)
Jack Parker is able to shoot at least 18 bullets from his handgun without reloading. (The Groupie)
Starsky tells the nurse on the phone that Hutch was operated upon “today.” It was actually yesterday. (Black and Blue)
Slate captures Biggs at 406 Main, stuffs him in the trunk, drives him around, only to take him out in front of the building with the address 455 Main. (Strange Justice)
Dispatch calls officers to the Rosslyn Hotel at 458 S. Weller. The address on the actual building is 455 S. Main. (Strange Justice)
When the tractor busts out of the burning barn, the two people in the wagon have different color pants on than Starsky and Hutch. (The Trap)
When Starsky and Hutch take Lisa back to Police Headquarters, Hutch is wearing his light tan brown jacket. But when he goes over to the water-cooler to get a drink, his jacket is a much darker brown one. (Foxy Lady)
There is a background whistling noise that noticeably disappears and reappears when the camera shot goes back and forth between Starsky and Hutch as they discuss how to take down Duvcha. The scene is most likely edited from two separately filmed takes. (The Collector)
Starsky and Hutch are wearing different clothes when they arrive at Annie’s after leaving Metro. The timing makes it unlikely they would have stopped to change. (The Collector)
Hutch, Candy, and Hammer are having burgers at The Pits. Starsky’s car is parked out front, but Starsky isn’t there. (The Golden Angel)
A recycled shot from an earlier episode is used for the shot of Starsky and Hutch pulling up in front of the bar in the Torino. The first time the shot is used is when Starsky and Hutch go to the Jungle Club to talk to Denise Gerard.
